Listed below are a selection of recent casualties which we hope you will find useful. If you have an interest in cargo on board any of the vessels detailed on this page, or indeed on vessels not featured, we can provide advice and assistance particularly in relation to pursuing losses arising from these incidents. CCNI ARAUCO                                   September 2016
Nature of Incident:      The containership was berthed at the HHLA container terminal at the Burchard
               Quay in Hamburg when she suffered an explosion & fire in her aft cargo hold.
               The fire was extinguished on 4 September 2016. Salvage & fire-fighting
               services were provided by Ardent Salvage under an LOF Salvage Agreement &
               by local fire-fighters.
               Cargo in the affected hold has been damaged by fire & extinguishing water &
               shipowners have declared General Average.
               Most of the cargo was due to remain on board for the next leg of the voyage &
               it seems that the Hamburg bound cargo (most if not all) had already been
               discharged prior to the fire. At the time there was 1999 containers or 2990
               teu remaining on board (2805 were loaded & 183 were empty). All the
               cargo on board has been discharged into storage at Hamburg.
               Salvage & General Average security will have to be provided by cargo &
               container interests. Roose+Partners are appointed to protect the interests
               of part cargo on board.

MSC FABIOLA                                      April 2016
Nature of Incident:      The vessel was on voyage from Marsaxlokk, Malta to Salalah, Oman when she
               suffered a grounding whilst transiting the Suez canal. The grounding occurred
               after the vessel had suffered a blackout and steering failure. The vessel
               was refloated on 29 April and has since proceeded from the incident,
               although major delays were caused to vessels using the canal.

HENG YU                                        April 2016
Nature of Incident:       The vessel was on voyage from Kwangyang, Korea to Zhangjiagang, China
               when she collided with vessels “HUA DE 988” & “SHAN SHI”. Serious
               damage was sustained & salvors were engaged to assist in lightening the
               cargo to enable the refloating of the vessel. Discharged cargo was carried by
               barges to Taicang terminal for temporary storage.

HANJIN AQUA                                   December 2015
Nature of Incident:      On 4 December 2015 the vessel was on passage from various ports in Australia to
               Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore when she ran aground off Sangiang Island in
               the Sunda Strait. The hull was breached & one of the ballast tanks flooded, a
               portside list developed. The containership was carrying 2,303 containers on board.

ANEMONE                                     November 2015
Nature of Incident:      On 12 November 2015 the vessel was making her way from Tocopilla, Chile to
               Bayuquan, China when she suffered an engine breakdown. Salvors attended the
               vessel and towed her to Busan, South Korea.

Nature of Incident:      The vessel sank near the Bahamas during hurricane Joaquin whilst on passage
               from the USA to Puerto Rico with the loss of all her crew & containerised cargo.

CAPE MORETON                                  September 2015
Nature of Incident:      The vessel was on a voyage from China to the Philippines. Whilst berthed at
               Manila the vessel suffered an explosion & fire in one of the cargo holds. The
               resulting fire-fighting efforts led to cargo becoming damaged by extinguishing
               water. The owners declared General Average.

MAERSK SEOUL                                     July 2015
Nature of Incident:      The vessel suffered a fire & explosion off the coast of the UAE on 19 July 2015,
               whilst on passage from the Middle East to Europe. The fire was in the deck
               cargo on the Hold 2 Hatch in Bays 05/06/07. Svitzer & Al Mubarak
               Overseas LL attended as salvors & delivered the vessel to Jebel Ali.
               GA was declared.

Nature of Incident:      The vessel was on passage from China to El Salvadore when she was
               immobilised in the North Atlantic. Salvage services
               were performed by Greek salvors.

JINDAL KAMAKSHI                                     June 2015
Nature of Incident:      The vessel was 40 miles north of Mumbai when she suffered a shift of containers
               & hull breach which led to her developing a list of 12°. The crew managed to
               reduce the list to 8° & the vessel’s anchors were deployed but the situation
               deteriorated & the crew evacuated the vessel. Smit Singapore were
               appointed for salvage & the vessel was towed to a position at Arnala.

COURAGE                                       June 2015
Nature of Incident:      On 2 June the Courage suffered a fire which began on No. 10 car deck. The fire
               was reported to have been extinguished using the vessel’s CO² system &
               the vessel was anchored off Southampton. She then proceeded to Bremerhaven
               for discharge of the cargo and repairs.

MAERSK KARACHI                                   May 2015
Nature of Incident:      On 14 May 2015 whilst the Maersk Karachi was berthed at the NTB Northsea
               Terminal in the port of Bremerhaven undergoing loading operations,
               one of the port’s container cranes collapsed & fell onto the containership
               causing significant damage to the vessel. The vessel then suffered a fire in
               the affected hold & the subsequent efforts to extinguish the fire have
               led to a GA declaration by the vessel’s owners.

HANJIN GREEN EARTH                                 May 2015
Nature of Incident:      On 1 May the fully cellular containership Hanjin Green Earth suffered a fire
               in her aft cargo stow whilst proceeding northbound on the Suez Canal. Suez
               Canal Authority tugs attended providing fire-fighting assistance

MAERSK LONDRINA                                   April 2015
Nature of Incident:      During the afternoon of 25 April 2015, the fully cellular containership Maersk
               Londrina suffered an explosion & fire in one of her cargo holds whilst in a
               position some 619 miles from Port Louis, Mauritius. The containership which
               has a carrying capacity of 8,700 teu, was in the course of a voyage from China
               Singapore & Malaysia to the Brazilian ports of Santos, Septiba, Itapoa, Itajai
               & Parangua. The vessel diverted to Port Louis where fire-fighting operations
               operations could continue

JS DANUBE                                       April 2015
Nature of Incident:      On 28 April the JS Danube grounded whilst entering the port of Mombasa.

               assistance under a LOF Salvage contract & the vessel was refloated on 2 May
               after cargo lightering operations had been completed General Average
               security from all property interests

SEA-LAND METEOR                                    March 2015
Nature of Incident:      On 31 March 2015 the Sea-Land Meteor grounded on the Wester Scheldt whilst
               inbound to Antwerp from US ports. She was refloated under the terms of a Lloyd’s
               Open Form Salvage contract & proceeded to Antwerp. The owners of the vessel
               provided salvage security to the salvors to enable the cargo to go forward from
               Antwerp but in turn they declared General Average & are seeking to collect
               General Average security from all property interests

FT ODIN                                          March 2015
Nature of Incident:      The FT Odin, which was in ballast, suffered an engine breakdown off the Greek
               island of Kythira. Tsavliris Salvage were contracted to assist on LOF terms &
               they dispatched the tug Christos XVIII. Meanwhile the vessel was able to anchor
               off the coast. She has since been towed to Turkey.

ELBINSEL                                      January 2015
Nature of Incident:      The Elbinsel experienced an engine breakdown whilst on a laden voyage between
               Spanish & Portuguese ports & Casablanca which the crew were unable

               the vessel declared General Average.

MONTEVIDEO EXPRESS                                January 2015
Nature of Incident:      The Montevideo Express suffered a fire in her auxiliary engine room on
               21 January 2015 whilst in the course of a voyage from Cartagena, Colombia
               to Veracruz, Mexico. She was assisted by tugs into Tampa, Florida where she
               has since discharged her cargo. The vessel is unable to complete the voyage &
               will be towed to Europe for repairs. The cargo will be onforwarded on
               alternatives vessels. The owners of the vessel declared General Average.

Nature of Incident:      The car carrier lost stability as she was departing the port of Southampton whilst
               under the control of a local pilot. Reports suggest the pilot and
               Captain took the decision to ground the vessel intentionally on
               Brambles Bank to avoid the vessel capsizing in the channel.

Nature of Incident:      The Yuan Ping Sea was at anchor off her port of destination when, during a swell,
               she dragged & collided with the vessel Kiran American & became
               entangled in the other vessel’s anchor. Tugs assisted in separating
               But the two vessels & the Yuan Ping Sea was then towed into Cai Mep, Vietnam

VITASPIRIT                                     November 2014
Nature of Incident:      The vessel loaded at Porto Trombetas, Brazil on 2 November & later ran aground
               at Macapa anchorage (617 km away) on 4 November. She was refloated on
               7 November & proceeded to her destination port of Aughinish, Ireland.

SAN FELIPE                                     October 2014
Nature of Incident:      On 29 October 2014 the SAN FELIPE was in collision with
               the AL RIFFA which was moored at Port Klang. As a result of the collision
               both vessel's caught fire & this quickly spread into the forward container stacks.
               Some 500 containers of cargo on board the SAN FELIPE suffered damage
               from fire & extinguishing water.

Nature of Incident:      The vessel grounded off Iran in the Arabian Gulf & was refloated under the
               terms of a Lloyd's Open Form of Salvage agreement. She was loaded with
               1,045 containers & was en route from Jebel Ali, UAE to Karachi, Pakistan

               with 2,078 containers (3,199 teu) bound for Buenaventura, Callao, Iquique &
               San Antonio. Svitzer Salvage assisted with the refloating operation on
               commercial terms.

Nature of Incident:      The vessel grounded off the coast of Iceland on 17 September whilst en route
               from Eskifjordur to Faskrudsfjordur. She was assisted by Svitzer Salvage &
               the Coastguard & once refloated she was taken into Fáskrúðsfirði for inspection.

Nature of Incident:      The vessel grounded off Vattarnes, on the east coast of Iceland on 6 September.
               Assisted by Svitzer Salvage under the terms of a LOF Salvage & contract
               & once refloated she was taken into Eskifjordur harbour. She has water ingress
               into her engine room & it is possible she will be unable to complete the voyage.

Nature of Incident:      The 2012 built landing craft, which operates out of Port Moresby, was on a
               voyage from Napa Napa, Papua New Guinea to Herd Base on the Purari
               River laden with oil drilling supplies/material & diesel fuel when she
               grounded off Papua New Guinea. The LOF is dated 24 July 2014.

               UK. The vessel was en-route from Rotterdam to New York & had to be assisted
